Secretary-General
The Secretary-General is the CPA's chief executive officer, responsible for the interpretation and implementation of its policies and the enhancement of its activities and is in charge of the CPA Secretariat.
Dr William F. Shija, a former Member and Minister in the Parliament of Tanzania, assumed the post of CPA Secretary-General on 1 January 2007. He succeeded Hon. Denis Marshall, QSO, of New Zealand. Dr Shija was appointed to the post for a five-year term by the CPA General Assembly on 9 September 2006 in Abuja, Nigeria. Dr Shija was a Tanzanian MP from 1990 to 2005 and also served in 2004 and 2005 as a Member of the Pan-African Parliament.
The previous Secretaries-General were: Sir Howard d'Egville (1911 to 1961); Sir Robin Vanderfelt (1961 to 1986); Dr the Hon. David Tonkin (1986 to 1992); Mr Arthur Donahoe, QC (1993 to 2001) and Hon. Denis Marshall, QSO (2001 to 2006).
